Taiwan - Kaohsiung
A city on the cusp of exciting change - that's Taiwan's ocean capital, Kaohsiung. Steeped in industrial history, this harbour city is quick to embrace an exciting future as a fast growing metropolis. Beautiful architecture, historic temples, hot springs, night markets and a burgeoning restaurant and bar scene make Kaohsiung your perfect springboard to the treasures of Southern Taiwan. Travel between capital Taipei and Kaohsiung (and the six cities in between) is now just 90 minutes by high speed rail, making the entire Taiwanese west coast now an easy day trip from either city.

The night market of Liu Ho is without doubt, where the city gets its second wind after dusk, with streets stalls evolving at a dizzying pace. Spearfish soup, Tantze noodles are usual favourites but the city’s famed roasted mullet tendon dish can only be found here. What’s a vacation without getting a little mud on your face? Taiwan is blessed in this regard – hot springs are a plenty. The famed hot mud springs of Guanzhiling in nearby Tainan are worth the 90-minute trip from Kaohsiung city. Catch a ferry to Chichin Island, offshore of Kaohsiung where locals head for fresh seafood and a sunset stroll on the beach. A tricycle on the island’s new coastal bike path offers plenty of fresh ocean air and an unconventional way to get around.
