Yangon’s magnificent pagodas form the city’s centrepieces. Towering 100m above the green cityscape, the famous Shwedagon Pagoda is a 2,556-year old wonder. Its great golden globe lights the city, the revered pagoda gilded with more than 11 tonnes of gold. In the heart of the city is the 2,500-year Sule Pagoda; while at Chauk Htat Gyi Pagoda, witness a colossal image of the reclining Buddha. Then for a wondrous trip, venture beyond Yangon to Bagan, a city of over two thousand pagodas. Spread over 16 square miles, it is the richest archaeological site in Asia, literally studded with pagodas of all sizes and shapes.
