Angkor Wat not only describes the entire complex of temples, each built by separate rulers – it is also a single temple. Built in the early 12th century, it is the largest and best-kept temple, a high point for classical Khmer architecture. At Angkor Thom, built in the late 12th century, be greeted by its imposing face-towers as you enter. A jewel of Khmer art, Banteay Srei is unusual as the only major temple not built for a king, its elaborate buildings all carved out of sandstone. Ironically through neglect, Ta Prohm is one of the most mystical temples – housing the ruins of what used to be a grand temple, it has been dramatically embraced by strangler figs and silk-cotton trees.
