Once centre of the Indian spice trade, Kochi is one of India’s largest ports and, like many South Indian cities, is fast becoming a hub for the IT industry. Yet the city is still dotted with rich traces of history. Charming Vasco House on Rose Street is one of the oldest Portuguese houses in India, where trader Vasco de Gama lived. Kochi once had a thriving Jewish community, and a synagogue can be found in Mattancherry, complete with Chinese tiles and Belgian chandeliers.
