Coimbatore’s real edge lies in its location in the vicinity of the Nilgiri hills, which give the district a salubrious climate that is much cooler than the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu. It’s lush golf courses which offer some of the best greens in the country, are also one of the most challenging due to the winds. Make your way to colonial Ooty - it’s rolling hills, cascading waterfalls, tea gardens and eucalyptus trees make it.

Also worth a go is a scenic four-hour ride on the quaint little steam engine train that sets off with a loud hoot and a puff of black soot, chugging slowly from Mettupalayam to Ooty via Coonoor. The train passes through some long bridges and stunning views.
