In the heart of an unsung part of Borneo, Balikpapan is Kalimantan’s gateway city. Most venture here for business reasons, in particular the mining industry. Yet the city still has the feel of an undiscovered corner of Asia, blending Bugis, Javanese, Dayaks and foreigners into a diverse ethnic melting pot.
