Travel with Children

Infant/Child Passenger Regulations:

It is not recommended for infants to travel within the first 7 days of birth and definitely not acceptable within the first 48 hours of birth. Each infant or child must be accompanied by a parent or guardian of at least 18 years of age. Otherwise, our unaccompanied minor special assistance service applies. One adult may travel with two infants provided their ages allow one to use an approved child safety seat and the other an infant seatbelt. SilkAir will not be able to accept you and your infants on our flights if this safety requirement is not met. If you are travelling alone with two infants, please contact your local SilkAir office, so we can help you make the arrangements required.

Child Safety Seat

The use of booster seats and; vest and harness-type child restraint devices are not permitted. However, you can use approved car-type child safety seats and FAA-approved child harness such as AmSafe's Child Aviation Restraint System (CAReS) child harness.

Child safety seats may be used for a child/infant under 3 years of age. To ensure the safety of your child, it is recommended that the child be secured in its child safety seat by its harness at all times even when the fasten seatbelt sign is not switched on during the flight. The child safety seat shall adhere to the following:

  • It must be placed in the appropriate forward or rear-facing direction and secured to the passenger seat by means of the aircraft seatbelt (lap belt/two-point harness) as per the child safety seat manufacturer instructions manual.
  • It must not exceed the dimensions of the aircraft seat, and must be of a dimension that should typically fit into the following maximum area, measured between the armrests of the aircraft seat of the respective cabin class:

  • Child safety seat when fitted must not extend unreasonably beyond the passenger seat and block the access to an aisle. Aisle access must be available during taxi, take-off and landing. Aisle access is considered not blocked if the adult can squeeze pass the child safety seat with the seats in the immediate row forward set in the upright position.
  • Child safety seats that have to be secured by a three-point harness (i.e. seatbelts that are worn over the shoulder like in cars) are not allowed to be used on board our flights.
  • There are some rear-facing child safety seats that have a detachable base that may keep the child safety seat from fitting properly in the passenger seat. The following visual cues will assist you to determine if the detachable base is necessary:
    • If there is no belt path on the rear-facing child safety seat, then it must be used with the detachable base on aircraft.
    • If there is a belt path on the rear-facing child safety seat, and the child safety seat is properly labelled, then it does not need to be used with the detachable base on aircraft.

The child safety seat must also be approved by a foreign airworthiness authority/government standards.

This may include, but not be limited to the following:

  • United Kingdom (UK) Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
  • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States of America as meeting the Technical Standard Order TSO-C100b; or seats that have two markings: “This Restraint is Certified for Use in Motor Vehicles and Aircraft" in red lettering and “This seat conforms to all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)".
  • European Safety Standard requirements of United Nations ECE Regulation 44 (UN/ECE 44) or TUV Doc: TUV/958-01/2001 - For Use In Aircraft.
  • Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) No. 213 entitled “Child Restraint Systems" or CMVSS No. 213.1 entitled “Infant Seating and Restraint Systems".
  • Australian/New Zealand design standard AS/NZS 1754 for infant car seats.

Some examples of the labels displayed on child safety seat approved under one of the above standards can be found below. Please note that you may be asked to show the approval labelling to our ground staff and cabin crew. So please make sure you know where to find it.


If you are using a child safety seat or a child harness, you’ll need to show our cabin crew that you’ve fitted the child safety seat/harness securely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Please note that the manufacturing standards and instructions must be provided to our ground staff and cabin crew for reference, when required. The use of child safety seat and child harness on board is subject to all child safety seat requirements. Both cannot be installed on seats at the emergency exit rows as well as the rows immediately before and after it.

Infant/Child Meal

Infant/child meals are available on all SilkAir operated flights, except those between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Please make the requests at time of booking.

While only a limited number of bassinets are available onboard on a first-come, first-served basis, we recommend that you request for a bassinet when you book an infant ticket to assure easy travel with your infants.

Convertible Inflight Beds for Children

Travel gadgets that convert into leg rests or inflight beds for children may be used on board our flights as long as the instructions for use set by the manufacturer(s) are followed.

For your child's safety, these convertible inflight beds may only be used at the window seats. Your child must also be able to fasten the seatbelt under his or her arm when using the inflight bed. If your child is under 2 years of age, he or she must be removed from the convertible inflight bed, and secured with an infant seatbelt whenever the seatbelt sign is switched on.


To ensure safe use of convertible inflight beds for children, they:

  • Must be packed and securely stowed in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front during taxi, take-off and landing
  • Cannot be used at the emergency exit rows
  • Must not interfere with or prevent the seat in front from reclining
  • Must not damage the aircraft seat if they need to be attached to any part of the seat
  • Cannot be combined so as to allow two or more convertible inflight beds to occupy several seats, as shown.

The convertible inflight bed should not exceed a total dimension of 115cm (when the length, width and height of the fully deployed bed is combined), and will be counted as part of your cabin baggage allowance.
